This region touts a strong educational record, with the best SAT and ACT scores in the state, and a national test ranking that is above-average. The Reno/Tahoe region is comprised of five counties all of which offer outstanding public services.

- Douglas County (Stateline/Zephyr Cove/Glenbrook/Minden/Gardnerville, NV)
- El Dorado County (South Lake Tahoe, CA)
- Placer County (North Tahoe/Truckee, CA)
- Carson City Municipality (Carson City, NV)
- Washoe County (Reno/Sparks/Incline Village, NV)

WASHOE COUNTY

The County

Washoe County, nestled on the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in western Nevada, holds a varied landscape, ranging from high Sierra peaks to the beaches of Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake, to the alkali flats of the Black Rock Desert. The county also boasts a diverse economy and cultural identity. Washoe County borders the states of California and Oregon to the west and north, respectively. Adjoining Nevada counties include Carson, Churchill, Humboldt, Lyon, Pershing and Storey.

The Schools

Like most large school districts, Washoe County's schools include elementary (grades K-6), middle schools (grades 7 and 8), and high schools (grades 9-12). In addition, the Regional Technical Institute offers a wide range of advanced level occupational classes for juniors and seniors. The Marvin Picollo School serves students from all grade levels with severe or multiple disabilities. Currently there are 61 elementary schools, 15 middle schools and 12 comprehensive high schools plus Washoe High School (an alternative school), Truckee Meadows Community College High School (for juniors and seniors) and the Regional Technical Institute.

Nineteen elementary schools operate on a non-traditional calendar. Eight of those schools follow a multi-track schedule and nine operate on a single-track, year-round schedule. Two operate on a 45/15, year-round schedule. All Incline Village schools and Natchez Elementary School are on a modified schedule. All other schools have a traditional nine-month calendar.
