Tahoe Lifestyle

May 16th, 2008

I just returned from our first boat ride of the season on Lake Tahoe- a gorgeous nearly perfect day, no wind and no crowds! Incline Village is the gem of Lake Tahoe- central to ski resorts like Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Northstar, Mt Rose, Heavenly and our own Ski Incline “Diamond Peak”. Squaw Valley closed yesterday, and today we are out swimming (very briefly!) in the Lake. We enjoy mountain bikng out our back door, rock climbing at Trippy Rock- just a fe minutes up Mt. Rose Hwy, there are 2 golf courses, a huge recreation center with Olympic pool, two beaches for residents- one with outdoor pool, and great outdoor dining, music, even movies under the stars during summer.
This is a great article on Lake Tahoe from USA Today

Fall Recipe- Beef Stroganoff

October 1st, 2007

Beef Stroganoff was invented by a chef working for a Russian general, Count Pavel Stroganov, in the 1890s. It became popular in the U.S. in the 1950s from servicemen returning from Europe and China after WWII. Beef Stroganoff is basically tender strips of beef and mushrooms cooked in a sour cream sauce and served over noodles. You will want to make this with a tender cut of beef, such as tenderloin or top sirloin. I like to buy the packages of pre-chopped beef to save time!

Ingredients

 6 Tbsp butter
1 pound of top sirloin or tenderloin, cut thin into 1-inch wide by 2 1/2-inch long strips
1/3 cup beef broth or beef bouillon broth
1/3 cup chopped shallots (can substitute onions)
1/2 pound cremini mushrooms, sliced
Salt to taste
Pepper to taste
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon of dry tarragon or 2 teaspoons of chopped fresh tarragon
1 cup of sour cream at room temperature
dry cooking sherry, to taste

Method

1 Melt 3 Tbsp of butter in a large skillet on medium heat. Increase the heat to high/med-high and add the strips of beef. You want to cook the beef quickly, browning on each side, so the temp needs to be high enough to brown the beef, but not so high as to burn the butter. You may need to work in batches. While cooking the beef, sprinkle with some salt and pepper. When both sides are browned, remove the beef to a bowl and set aside.

2 In the same pan, reduce the heat to medium and add the shallots. Cook the shallots for a minute or two, allowing them to soak up any meat drippings. Remove the shallots to the same bowl as the meat and set aside.

3 In the same pan, melt another 3 Tbsp of butter. Increase heat to medium high and add the mushrooms. Cook, stirring occasionally for about 4 minutes. While cooking, sprinkle the nutmeg and the tarragon on the mushrooms.

4 Reduce the heat to low and add the sour cream to the mushrooms. Add beef broth to thin sauce, as desired. Add dry sherry, to taste. Mix in the sour cream thoroughly. Do not let it come to a simmer or boil or the sour cream will curdle. Stir in the beef and shallots. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Serve immediately over egg noodles.

Serves 4.

Tahoe City Fire- West Shore, Lake Tahoe

August 18th, 2007

At about 1:30pm on Saturday, August 18, a house fire spread to a 5 acre brush fire south of Sunnyside, near Tahoe City. the fire is located between Pineland Drive and Washoe Way, Three structures have burned , evacuations have started for Talmont and Sequoia avenue and Highway 89.

Smoke is billowing from the fire, with an orange glow. Viewing the fire from Incline Village, the smoke is very close to the lake shore. For residents living north of the fire, this is a scary scenario, as winds are blowing about 25 mph from the south- southwest. Keep posted and take head any new evacuations.

These are photos taken at about 3pm from Incline Village beach.

Boating on Lake Tahoe

May 19th, 2007

Some of the best places to visit on the east shore are easily accessible by boat. Skunk Harbor, Chimney Beach, and even the coves right off of Sand Harbor are excellent for swimming. Let us know some of your favorite spots to anchor.
