Video: Legacy Properties for family destinations

Lake Tahoe is an ideal market for “Legacy homes” that serve as gathering places for families typically passed along to the next generation. Philip White, CEO for Sotheby’s International Realty, recently commented on the trend in a Bloomberg interview noting that waterfront and ski properties rate among the most popular destinations for legacy properties.

Like Colorado with it’s world renowned ski resorts and Hawaii with its blue waters and beaches, Lake Tahoe offers the best in alpine recreation and a huge variety of summer waterfront activities. It is a rarity to find a four season destination that combines the best in ski and waterfront properties. Lake Tahoe truly has it all.

The Tahoe region boasts the highest concentration of ski areas in the US, Including Squaw Valley USA, Alpine Meadows, Homewood, Northstar, Diamond Peak, Mt. Rose, Heavenly, Kirkwood, Sierra at Tahoe, Sugar Bowl, Boreal, and Tahoe Donner. There are numerous cross-country ski areas, Cat skiing, heli skiing along with backcountry skiing, snowshoeing, kite skiing, and snowmobiling outfitters, sled dogs, ice-skating, and a wide range of winter activities.

The resort amenities are also world-class. The Ritz Carlton offers ski in ski out accommodations mid-mountain at Northstar Ski area and the village boasts numerous shops, restaurants and a popular ice-skating rink with live music and outdoor fire pits and cabanas. Just a few miles down the road, Squaw Valley Offers the best terrain for the big mountain skier. With its merger with neighboring Alpine Meadows, The two areas, once combined, will be the largest ski resort in North America aside from Whistler Mountain. Numerous other mountains around the lake offer a variety of terrain for all skiers, many with scenic Lake Vista’s and ample entertainment and nightlife.

Boating on Lake Tahoe in the summer is one of it’s best kept secrets. Destinations like the golden sand beaches and protected harbors along Tahoe’s East Shore boast miles of unspoiled beauty and crystal clear waters warm enough to swim in and camp alongside in. Like the clear waters in Hawaii and the Caribbean, you can see as far down as 70′ into the Lake, and the boulders and unique formations along the shore offer a little known opportunity for snorkeling and diving in the pristine waters. Among the favorite pastimes for kids is hunting crawdads along the rocky shore, now commercially harvested by Lake Tahoe lobster company. They are delicious like the well-known cold water Atlantic lobster, but smaller and with a sweeter taste.

There are numerous lakeside restaurants and bars if you cast off and head to Tahoe’s North and West shores, including the Hyatt Pier in Incline Village with live music and drinks served on the docks alongside the sand beach, Garwoods on Carnelian Bay, Sunnyside at Tahoe City and Chambers Landing in picturesque Homewood with sand beach. Each is known for their own specialty drink, the Golden Eagle, the Wet Woody and Chamber’s Punch, all have live entertainment and a great menu. South Lake Tahoe has a draw all of its own with resort casinos, concerts and shows with headliners, fine dining and lakeside entertainment for all ages.

When it comes to choosing a vacation home, accessibility is one of the best reasons to choose Tahoe over all of the other renowned destinations. The Reno- Tahoe airport is within an hour to the ski resorts, and 3 smaller airports around the Lake Tahoe can bring you within 10 minutes from the jet to the slopes. Lake Tahoe is a 3-1/2 hr drive from the San Francisco Bay Area, Wine Country and Silicon Valley and a direct flight from most major Western US cities with connecting flights to the East Coast.
